OAICD Supports the Implementation of Coaching Practice
June 02, 2023
The primary focus for the OAICD Education Committee this year is to support the implementation of coaching practice in ICDP. Coaching is a process and style of interaction used by early intervention practitioners to build the capacity of family members and other important care providers to promote the child's learning and development within the child’s natural environment.
In April 2023, ICDP Managers and Supervisors were invited to attend an introductory session with Dathan Rush and M’Lisa Shelden, authors of the Early Childhood Coaching Handbook.
Following this event, ICDP professionals were invited to attend a two-day session in May 2023 with Dathan Rush and M’Lisa Shelden which provided an in-depth background and rationale for using a coaching interaction style in early intervention. In total, 186 registrants representing 31 ICDPs attended this event.
Future plans to support the implementation of coaching this year include two upcoming Managers/Supervisors meetings hosted by the OAICD Board and two Community of Practice sessions for ICDP Professionals facilitated by OAICD Board members. In addition, Rush and Shelden will host a follow-up session in October for ICDP professionals who attended the May training event. This additional booster session was included in the two-day registration fee.
Funding from the Lorna Montgomery Lifelong Learning Fund has made it possible to offer these training events at reasonable cost to OAICD members. We are extremely grateful for this support.
